History
This special garden tucked behind The Stable was created to encourage young people to use their five senses while learning about the joys of being outdoors. The large selection of shrubs, perennials, herbs and native plants were chosen specifically to attract pollinators and birds. Many species of butterflies have been spotted at the garden, with the showiest being Monarchs, Black and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, American Lady and Sulphur Blues. There also have been sightings of Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, which are attracted to the honeysuckle, and families of robins often can be found nesting in the wooden pergola.
Several different areas comprise the garden; there's the Perennial Garden, Herb Garden, and play area featuring several permanent musical instruments along with a climbing rock, balance log and stepping stones. It has become a hub for children's educational activities and a popular destination for nature lovers of all ages looking for a quiet, peaceful place to relax.
The Children's Garden was established in 2017 through a joint partnership between the Conservancy for Ridgewood Public Lands and the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department.
