History
Originally called Linwood Park when it was established on May 6, 1910, the park was renamed Graydon Park in 1931. The 2.68-acre pool was a realization of the dream of Samuel Graydon; Graydon was the former head of the Shade Tree Commission in 1909 and the grandson of Samuel Dayton, one of Ridgewood's founding fathers. He constructed a dam on the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook at Linwood Avenue in 1918 to create a summer swimming area. Construction of the pool took two years and cost $23,000 to landscape and install a chlorination system. According to “The History of a Village,'' in 1929 when the pool opened, one man operated as a lifeguard, maintenance man, and policeman. Pool season badges sold for 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. In 1936, the Works Progress Administration enlarged the pool to its current size. The badge office building, originally constructed as a bathhouse during the WPA era, and the fieldstone wall encircling the pool and center island still stand today. In early 2018, the Sycamore Tree Island at the corner of Linwood and North Maple Avenue at Graydon had to be taken down due to an illness. The tree had been at Graydon prior to the pool being built in 1926. Although Graydon Pool has evolved over the years, it continues to provide enjoyment to residents.
